Composite decking (Trex, TimberTech) in Grand Rapids

Composite decking, from Trex, TimberTech and others, costs more than wood to buy and takes less effort to keep. Trex says its high-performance boards never need staining or painting and clean up with soap and water.

Same look, different warranty

Two boards can look nearly alike and carry very different warranties. Trex's limited residential warranties run 25 years on Enhance, 35 on Select and 50 on Transcend, with fading and staining covered too. The line should be named on the quote.

Composite decks in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids' deck permit guide says man-made decking products are subject to approval by the Building Inspections Division before use, and calls for a footing inspection after the holes are dug and before concrete is poured. Choose a product with its evaluation paperwork and make sure the permit plans name it.

Underneath, it is still a wood frame

The boards usually sit on pressure-treated lumber. Footings, the ledger and its flashing, and joist spacing decide how long the deck lasts, and each board has a rated span that sets how far apart the joists can be.

What gets built

  • Composite or PVC boards.
  • Hidden fasteners.
  • Picture-frame borders.
  • Composite or aluminum railing.

  • Which product line, with its warranty in writing?
  • What joist spacing does the board require?
  • Will the joists get protective tape?
  • Where is the board's evaluation report?

Common questions

Do I need a permit for a deck in Grand Rapids?
Yes for any deck attached to or next to a house, and for a freestanding deck of 200 square feet or more, according to the city's deck permit guide. It calls for footings with at least 42 inches of cover and a footing inspection before concrete is poured. A contractor who pulls the permit must be licensed by the state and registered with the city.
Wood or composite?
Wood costs less to build and needs staining or sealing from time to time to keep its finish. Composite costs more and, by Trex's account, needs only soap and water. NAHB's lifespan study puts a wood deck at about 20 to 30 years in northern climates. Looks, budget and how much upkeep you want decide it.
How long does a deck take to build?
Ask for a schedule with the quote. Size, material, inspections and weather all set it.
Can the old deck be resurfaced instead of rebuilt?
Sometimes, if the frame is sound and meets code or can be brought up to it. The contractor should inspect the frame and say which it is.
